I am also part of #thisisus - teamwork!
I am a student dietitian at the University of Surrey and whilst I train to become a registered dietitian, my role is to work alongside the Nutrition and Dietetics team to support patients in meeting their nutritional requirements. This often means seeing lots of different areas of dietetic practice including Home Enteral Nutrition (HEN) / tube-feeding in the community. Most recently I have worked with the Oxford Health Community Dietitians, who support patients requiring HEN to meet their nutritional needs independently, whether this is at home, school or in a care home setting. This includes giving advice on appropriate feeds, equipment and administering feeds, in addition to monitoring weight and adjusting for any feed tolerance issues.
I strongly believe that dietetics as a profession is about so much more than the clinical advice given to patients and whilst this is key to safe and appropriate nutritional intake it is just one aspect of the HEN journey. With this in mind and in conjunction with PINNT and Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, I have been privileged to contribute to a collaborative survey project to gain a better insight about the experiences of Oxfordshire PINNT members and what they hope to gain from such patient advocacy group events.
I hope to be able to initiate more projects of this nature in future roles as a dietitian as the outcome of these surveys could provide a much deeper understanding of the patient experience. As a result, this may influence dietetic approaches to clinical practice in the future.
