Lisa shares #thisisme

I am part also part of #thisisus - teamwork!
I am Lisa, a specialist intestinal failure dietitian, and I work in Oxford within both the dietetics and nutrition support teams - also
#thisisus.
In these teams, my day-to-day tasks to support people living on HAN include seeing patients on the inpatient ward round who are supported by intravenous (parenteral) nutrition (PN). This means I am involved alongside other core members of the nutrition team; specialist nutrition nurses, pharmacists, and consult doctors in seeing our patients. This is primarily intravenous nutrition support, but I might also help with other aspects of nutrition care depending on what is appropriate for the person we are supporting - that might be tube feeding, eating, or ways we can support that person with the nutrition they are able to eat, such as specialist sip feeds.
I work alongside other dietitians who do the same role as me on that ward round, and I also work with other dietitians and clinical teams who work in specialist areas, such as surgery, intensive care, or medical wards. I also encounter people coming into outpatient clinics who have PN at home and do this also as part of a multidisciplinary team like we do on the ward rounds.
Sometimes we also see patients who come into hospital and are already on HAN - either on PN alongside the nutrition support team, or on enteral tube feeds within the dietetic team.
So, I see people on HAN who are at home, in hospital, or having to come into hospital on artificial nutrition support or going back home on HAN in my day-to-day role as part of a bigger team.
I hope the information about me, my colleagues, and my role is helpful to others to educate and inform people about HAN and associated networks, as well as to educate and inform healthcare colleagues and all others in the wider community about how people on HAN and healthcare professionals work together.
I am supporting HAN Week 2024 because I want to support the networks created by people on HAN like PINNT (a support and advocacy group for those on HAN), and to support and respect all people living on HAN.
