Medicines and Enteral Tubes
PINNT is delighted that our ongoing relationship with the British Pharmaceutical Nutrition Group (BPNG
). The BPNG continues to be supportive in working together to make a difference for people receiving parenteral and enteral nutrition.
In 2023 PINNT was delighted to be part of the team who updated the resources, ‘Medicines and Enteral Tubes.’ The collaboration brought together a wealth of knowledge, and members of PINNT’s enteral nutrition advisory panel were a valuable part of this team.
Here we share the words from the BPNG website:
Medicines & Tubes
These resources are for healthcare professionals and individuals with enteral feeding tubes or their carers.
Using an enteral feeding tube to administer medication should only be considered if the oral or another route is not appropriate. It is important that patients and healthcare professionals have the correct information to ensure the safe administration without causing patient harm or changing the intended medication effect.
Most medicine administration via a feeding tube falls outside the product license for that medicine, as does crushing tablets and opening capsules not specifically designed for this purpose. In these circumstances the prescriber and practitioner accept liability for and adverse effects resulting from the administration of that medicine.
The BPNG Resources are available to download:
- Administration poster: The poster highlights the key considerations and is in a printable format to place in a clinical area or pharmacy.
- Patient Information Leaflet (PIL): The Patient Information Leaflet can be completed electronically with patient medication details, with the correct formulation and administration advice. It can be printed or shared electronically with the patient.
PINNT suggests:
You raise awareness about these resources with your own healthcare professionals in case they are not aware of them.
Talking to your own healthcare professional if you would like a copy of the Patient Information Leaflet. They can complete it for you, discuss anything you feel is relevant, you will then have an accurate record of your medication details.
