A Journey of Kindness

My Story of Giving Back

When you’re juggling multiple health conditions, it’s easy to feel isolated and overwhelmed. But remember, you are not alone. There are countless others facing even greater challenges, and a little kindness can go a long way.

In November 2021, I made my first hair donation to The Little Princess Trust. My goal was simple: to bring joy to a child who had lost their hair due to cancer or other reasons. Although the child who received my hair will never know who I am, I found comfort in knowing that my donation could provide them with a sense of peace and identity. And for me, I knew I could always grow my hair back and do it all over again.

This time, my mission is even more significant. While bringing a smile to a child’s face is epic in itself and incredibly rewarding, I also want to raise awareness about artificial nutrition and the incredible work done by PINNT, Support and Advocacy for people on home artificial nutrition. This charity supports individuals who rely on artificial nutrition, whether it’s oral nutritional supplements, enteral (through the stomach or bowel), or parenteral (intravenous).

Many people undergoing cancer treatment require artificial nutrition to give their bodies the best chance of survival. However, the majority of individuals on artificial nutrition have a wide range of conditions that necessitate it. These individuals, both children and adults, often face lifelong health challenges. This is truly a lifesaving treatment.

Some of these conditions severely impact their ability to eat, whether due to symptoms like vomiting or pain, poor nutrient absorption, or a sluggish digestive system. As a result, malnutrition is a common reason for needing artificial nutrition. In some cases, malnutrition can lead to hair loss, affecting both children and adults. Given most people on artificial nutrition have hidden conditions and feeding tube and/or catheter, hair loss can be seen and often sparks people to take a second look but is also upsetting for the individual as it becomes the focal point of what people see and not the hidden treatment and condition(s).

Now, nearly four years after my initial hair donation, it’s time to give back to the charity that supported me when I needed it most – PINNT – and once again to support The Little Princess Trust. I believe it’s time for someone else to benefit from my hair, and I hope to inspire others to support this vital cause. Given PINNT is promoting sustainability I believe my donation is not only an act of kindness, but it is using hair I will grow back over time. I am also aware that ten years ago another PINNT member did the same during an awareness week, it is lovely to know other generous people who give their hair willingly and with good heart.

Together, we can make a difference. As I donate my hair, donations to my fund-raising page will support two great causes.  Your donation can not only provide a wig to a child but also to support those on artificial nutrition. Let’s spread kindness, joy and hope, one strand of hair at a time.

If you would like to support Aiste you can donate here - thank you for your support.
