PN contamination

Sadly over the past two days, 4th and 5th June, we have seen the sad coverage of the death of one baby and fourteen other babies infected, in neonatal units across England who developed septicaemia following the infusion of contaminated feeds.

A full investigation is underway. The company who compounded the feeds are working with relevant authorities to determine exactly what happened.

While this took place in hospital we know many people who have the same type of nutrition provided at home. Many of these people, PINNT members, will be concerned.

PINNT strongly suggest that anyone concerned in relation to their own intravenous nutrition, or their child s. should contact their own healthcare professionals or their homecare provider.

We can assure people that there is strict governance in relation to the compounding of intravenous nutrition. This is hopefully a one off incident which will be investigated fully to determine the facts.

We offer our sincere sympathy to the family of the baby who died and our thoughts go out to those who waiting to know that their baby has a clear test to show their blood infection has been cleared.
